It appears to have been based on a bandit, with its bill wrapping around the back of its neck and ending in what resembles a knot. It also appears to lack feet at this point. Its design from March has a nub on its back that was removed from the final.

Its early design is far more tengu-like, having a longer nose, feet resembling geta sandals, and a redder body. These features may have later served as inspiration for Shiftry. Its back sprite appears to be of a slightly different design, as evidenced by the color of its head, as well as the spikes on the sides of its face pointing forward rather than backward.

Originally had a different, yet familiar design to the final. It was red with three stripes on its underside, wearing a gray cap that does not resemble an acorn's. Its feet appear to have toes, unlike the final. Additionally, it holds a sprig of a plant in its mouth. The rings underneath its eyes seem to have carried over to the final.

It is remarkably similar to the final design. The primary difference is its short, segmented legs. Notably, its sprites were finalized as early as March 2002. This is why it is one of few Pokémon in the final game to feature no black outlines, as all sprites from the Pokémon AGB stage of development did so.

Similar in concept to the final design, but different in execution. While it features the false eyes on its wings that the final does, it also has a smiley face positioned inside of an eye shaped pattern on its body. This correlates much more strongly with Masquerain's Pokedex category of Eyeball. Its design from 2002 features brighter colors for its wings, though lacks the markings seen in the final.

Originally had a dark body with teal highlights (which would go on to become its main color), and featured a tail! Despite the apparent major differences, hallmarks of the final design are already present, such as the notches in its dorsal fin and possessing two markings near its eyes. Its next sprite is near-finalized, save for its yellow markings being smaller.

Its type was Psychic/Rock rather than Ground/Psychic. Its body appears to feature cracks that are absent from the final. Notably, its sprites were finalized as early as March 2002. This is why it is one of few Pokémon in the final game to feature no black outlines, as all sprites from the Pokémon AGB stage of development did so. It was named Syakoudo (シャコウド) in March and July 2002.
